Shred: Tips For a Green Divorce
Lynn Coleman began working on the Shred Installation in 2008 as a celebration of her divorce finalization. Eight years of litigation resulted in 288 pounds of divorce documents. In keeping with her respect for the environment and the philosophy "Renew, Reuse, Recycle" she started creating art fashioned out of shredded divorce documents, starting with hand made sheets of paper. On these 8 by 10 inch sheets she began a series of character portraits using symbolic imagery. Then she moved on to three dimensional concept pieces of paper mache' formed out of shredded divorce documents. These include a wedding cake, a Petitioner vs Respondent dart game, and the imbalance between the weight of a marriage certificate (less than an ounce) and 288 pounds of documents generated by a divorce. Fortunately it turns out there are many positive uses for shredded divorce documents. such as bunny litter box lining, nesting material in the hen house for chickens, yard mulch for weed abatement, Easter basket grass, and soaking up motor oil stains on the driveway.

The Age of Enlightenment brought us the printing press, an invention that created a more literate society. The common man had access to written materials in a way never possible before. Publishing empires rose as a result and welded great power and influence through out the world. Today the publishing world is being pushed into obscurity by technology. Encyclopedia's are extinct and printed books are becoming a thing of the past. As an avid reader and book lover with an extensive library Lynn Coleman has created an installation out of her Encyclopedia Britannica set as memorial to it's demise. Each volume has been randomly cut open to reveal a page from inside then is bound shut and stamped with a title.
